District History

The Northern District was organized June 23, 1940, with seven churches, namely Third Baptist and Bethel A. M.E. of San Francisco, Pilgrim Baptist, and San James A. M. E. Zion of San Mateo, Beth Edon Baptist and North Oakland Baptist Church of Oakland, The meeting was held at Third Baptist Church then located at 1399 Hyde Street in San Francisco, CA,  with nineteen ushers present. Rev. F.D. Haynes Sr. Pastor of Third Baptist presided as organizer and Mr. E.M. Brown was elected president.

The idea of banding together originated from Mrs. Gussie Franklin Richardson from St. James A.M.E. Zion Church who had a vision of a group of Christian ushers of all denominations working together in close relationship to discuss problem that confront ushers as a whole and to better fit themselves for efficient service in their respective churches. There were many meetings of St. james and First A.M. E. Zion with Mrs. Franklin, Mr. E.M. Brown and Mr. J. C. Harrison in attendance. They contacted other churches and a meeting was called with the approval of and presence of Rev. F. D. Haynes Sr., Rev. W. C. Sample of Pilgrim Baptist and Rev. W. S. Woods of Forest Baptist Church of Pittsburg., CA. These ministers remained with the organization throughout their lives.

The original name was Northern California Union Usher Board. The membership  included usher boards throughout the Bay Area. At one time it included Sacramento and cities surrounding San Jose. These Area now have local organization of their own as Sacramento Valley and Santa Clara District.

In 1941, Mrs. Franklin was elected as a delegate to the State Convention ar which time the Northern District was accepted to become part of the Union Usher Board, State of Californis.

The Junior Department was officially organized in 1946 at Bethel A.M.E Baptist Church in San Francisco in 1953. TheYouth Department was organized under the supervision of Mrs. Elmira Smith Ward Draper at St. James A.M.E. Zion Church in San Mateo. They joined the State in 1953.
